Description
Greenhill House, built in the late 18th century, is a detached house located on the north side of High Street in Thorncombe. The building features rubble walls with brick dressings and an ashlar stone facade, topped by a half-hipped slate roof with stone copings on the gables. It has a double-pile plan and is double-fronted, with 20th-century brick stacks at each gable. The house stands two storeys tall and has three bays, with double-hung sash windows that include wooden glazing bars and crown glass. The entrance boasts a six-panel moulded front door with an elliptical fanlight, and a portico supported by Tuscan columns with pedestals and Tuscan pilasters, featuring a plain moulded entablature.
Inside, there are recessed bays with elliptical heads on either side of the fireplace, and six-panelled doors throughout. At the rear of the property, there is an attached stable block from the 18th century, which also has rubble walls with brick dressings and a slate roof, along with stone gable copings and a 20th-century brick stack. The stable block includes two former carriage entrances, one of which is elliptical-headed with a Ham stone key and gauged bricks, while the other has been rebuilt. The facade of the house is well-balanced and in good condition.
