Description
Bagber Farmhouse, along with the attached wall, granary, and Nos. 21 and 22 Bagber Cottages, is a farmhouse with cottages that has origins dating back to the 17th century. The buildings have undergone alterations in the late 18th century, 19th century, and 20th century. They are arranged around a courtyard, with No. 22 extending to the north.
The farmhouse, which forms the south range of the courtyard, features plastered walls that reveal evidence of stone and flint banding. It has a tiled roof that is hipped at the right end, with brick stacks at both ends. There is a panelled door at the rear right end, topped with a fanlight and sheltered by a portico supported by Tuscan columns and a flat entablature, which includes iron trellis infill. The ground floor has three sash windows with glazing bars, while the first floor has four similar windows.
At the left end, there is a single-storey wing made of flint with a tiled roof, which forms the west range of the courtyard. The right end features a two-storey wing with walls of flint and brick banding and a tiled roof, forming the east range. Attached to the house at the left end is a cob garden wall with a tiled capping. Adjacent to this wall is an attached granary that has brick-nogged timber-framed walls and a two-hipped tiled roof with slate eaves courses.
No. 21, which is the north range, has walls of brick and flint banding, raised in brick, and a tiled roof. It has two storeys, with a door and all windows dating from the 20th century. No. 22, which is attached to the courtyard group on the north, has walls of stone and flint with some brick banding, a tiled roof, and a central brick stack. It also has two storeys, featuring a ledged door in a gabled timber porch on a brick base. The ground floor has two casement windows with glazing bars and one 20th-century casement, while the first floor has two casements with glazing bars. There is a blocked doorway at the left end. No. 21 is included for its group value.
