Description

This is a small, late 17th-century house located at the end of a row in Easton, Portland. The front is of painted stone, with rendered gable ends and an asbestos-cement slate roof. It is a two-storey and attic, one-windowed house with a parallel rear range, accessed at the gable end. The windows are 4-pane sashes. A 19th-century flush-panelled door is positioned far to the left. On the gabled return, there's a stone-cheeked porch with a flat slab roof, covering a 19th-century plank door. The rear has two 4-pane sashes. A raised verge is at the left end, and a tall rendered stack, raised on a stone base, is on the right.

Inside, you'll find ceiling joists with beaded edges, a deep ingle fireplace with a heavy wood bressumer, a wooden winder staircase, a bread oven, and early plank doors with wooden latches. The ceiling height on the ground floor is approximately 2.2 metres. The house is notably small, suggesting its early origins, and it has seen limited alterations in the 20th century. A former dovecote is located in the garden. Its survival is a significant historic feature within the street.
