Description

Nowell House is an 18th-century building with alterations and a modern pebble-dash finish. It has a two-story, four-window front, with the southern three bays set slightly back. The roof is tiled, formerly with stone tiles at the eaves on the north end, and incorporates two hipped dormers. The windows are mostly sash windows, with later frames lacking glazing bars. A stone door surround features a moulded architrave and pediment supported by voluted console brackets; a deep keystone connects the door head to the underside of the pediment. The entrance is a six-panelled door with a rectangular fanlight, and reveals are panelled. A stone plaque located under the northernmost first-floor window bears the inscription "'This house in which he spent his last years was given to Sherborne School by William James Bensly. A Shirburnian well loved as boy and master. 1888- 1943'." Nowell House, along with Pineska, Salem, No 7, G F S Room, All Hallows, Askwith House, Digby Estate Nos 207, 208 and 209, and two outbuildings to the south of Digby Estate No 209, forms a group with the west return of the premises occupied by Mr Hunt, Trendle Street.
