Description

The Obelisk on North Hill is a granite structure originally erected in London near St Mary Woolnoth's Church in the mid 19th century. It was brought to Swanage by George Burt and placed on its current site in 1892 to commemorate the provision of a new water supply to the town. The obelisk was taken down during the Second World War but was re-erected in 1973. It is hexagonal in shape and stands on a two-stage base with a pointed top, located on a prehistoric round barrow, making it a prominent feature of the landscape.
