Description
The archway at the entrance to Sherborne School Playing Fields dates from 1853 and was originally the entrance to Sherborne School. It is constructed of ashlar stone. The central feature is a wide pointed and moulded arch, which is flanked on the left by one buttress and on the right by two buttresses, all of which have one offset. Above the arch is a crenellated parapet. To the left of the main arch is a narrower arch that has carved foliated spandrels and a crenellated parapet as well. The main arch features carved quatrefoils or mouchettes in the spandrels, and there is a relief of the Royal Arms, added in 1889, situated in the space between the arch and the parapet. The archway is completed with iron gates.
