Description
This former dovecote, which later served as a privy and is now a store, is located approximately 5 meters west-southwest of No. 106 in Portland. It is possibly from the 17th century and features good squared and coursed Portland stone with a stone slab roof. The building is small and square, with an intermediate stone slab floor and a south-facing window opening that has been blocked flush with brick. The roof has a steep pitch and a stone ridge, and there is a 19th-century door on the east side that leads into a mid-20th century connecting glazed corridor to the house. A small opening is present on the west wall, away from the house. Stone gutters project at the ends of the structure. Although it appears to be an impressive privy from the outside, it was originally a dovecote; the blocked gable opening may have once contained louvre or dove openings. Inside, there is a stone floor slab at eaves level with a central square opening. This building is an unusual and rare survival, attached to a small house of corresponding historical interest.
