Description
The Market Cross in Stalbridge, located on the east side of High Street, dates from the second half of the 15th century, with the cross head added in the 20th century. It features a stone base with three steps and an octagonal shape. At the top of the base is a square plinth with three-quarters detached square columns at each corner, which have moulded bases and capitals. The central panels of the cross are carved but the details are too worn to be clearly understood. The shaft is tapering and begins as a square at the base, with the corners transitioning into attached pinnacles that end in finials. On the west side, there is a weathered carving of a figure standing on an animal beneath a canopy topped with a floriate finial. The Market Cross is scheduled as an ancient monument and is referenced in various historical texts.
