Description
The Alderholt War Memorial Cross is a 3-meter high wheel-head cross situated in front of the churchyard gates, facing Daggons Road. It is placed within a small, square flower bed on a lawn to the west of the Church of St James, which is also listed as Grade II.
This memorial is made of roughly hewn Cornish granite and features a tapered shaft that rises from a tapering plinth, which itself stands on a square concrete base. The front face of the plinth is smoothed and slightly recessed to accommodate the dedication and names, which are inscribed in leaded lettering. The dedication for the First World War is located on the south face of the plinth and reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO/ DIED IN THE GREAT WAR./ 1914 – 1918/ (18 NAMES)." On the east face, there is an additional dedication to the fallen of the Second World War, which states: "1939 – 1945/ (6 NAMES)."
