Description

Alderholt Mill is a watermill situated on the Ashford Water, dating to the late 18th century with extensions added in the 19th century. The central range is constructed of Flemish bond brickwork, notable for its flared headers and brick chainage to the ends. It has a slate roof with a brick stack to the left and brick gable coping to the right. The building is two storeys high and features irregular fenestration with most openings beneath segmental brick heads. Most windows are 19th-century two-light casements with glazing bars; the upper floor on the left side has later casements under timber lintels. Ground floor entrances are via plank doors, and an upper floor is accessed by a 20th-century steel stairway, leading to a partly glazed door. The mill contains an iron breast shot water wheel, manufactured by W Munden of Ringwood, dating from approximately 1862 to 1872. Internally, much of the original mill machinery, including a hurst, gearing, and hoists, remains intact and can still be partially rotated by the waterwheel.
