Description
The Priory House is a two-storey stone house located on the north side of Greenhill, dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with significant embellishments added in the early to mid 19th century. The building features a long front with three windows and a slate roof that includes two dormers. It has a castellated parapet with angle finials and painted lead rainwater heads decorated with fleur-de-lys and other ornaments.
The first floor has four-light mullioned windows with label-moulds, while the ground floor has five-light windows, all fitted with diagonal wood glazing bars. The doorway, which is a notable 19th-century feature, is set under a wide four-centred arched opening. It is flanked by four diagonally-set pilasters with a recessed panel design that support the castellated parapet above. The doorway itself has a four-centred head, glazed upper panels, and diagonal mouldings on the lower panels.
Inside, the house contains a 17th-century fireplace, an overmantel, and moulded panelling. The Priory House is part of a group of listed buildings on the north side of Greenhill, extending from Newell Cottage to Belmont, and on the south side from Delta to the premises occupied by Godden and Curtis.
