Description
The Green is a building dating primarily from the 18th century, with alterations, and is located at the top of Greenhill, partially obscuring the view. Since 1865, it has served as a “House” belonging to Sherborne School. The west-facing front is the only part of architectural significance. It presents as a five-window stucco front with a basement and attics. The roof is slate, with gable ends and stone parapet coping, incorporating two dormers.
A projecting Tuscan porch with steps leads to a round-headed doorway, which features a fanlight and an inscription in the entablature reading "Licensed to let post horses." The upper storey of the porch is a square bay with sash windows, incorporating moulded pilaster strips and blind boxes. A cornice runs along the head of the bay. Other windows are 18th-century sashes, with shutters to the lower floor. A splayed bay with a dentil cornice is located on the left-hand side of the ground floor.
The Green forms part of a group of listed buildings on the North Side of The Green, alongside The Cottage.
