Description

The Digby Memorial is an ornate stone cross erected in 1884 as a tribute to George Digby Wingfield Digby. It was designed by R H Carpenter and Benjamin Ingelow. The memorial features a stepped square base with a tall circular pedestal at each corner, each supporting a bronze statuette: St Aldhelm to the southwest, Bishop Roger to the northwest, Abbot Bradford to the northeast, and Sir Walter Raleigh to the southeast, with the statuettes created by Miss Singer of Frome. Between each pedestal, there are carved reliefs. On the south side, a bronze plaque bears an inscription honoring George Digby Wingfield Digby, who dedicated himself to completing the Abbey Church and was beloved by the community. The memorial is topped with an octagonal tier featuring arcading on each side, a tapering shaft richly decorated with buttresses and crockets, and is crowned by a crucifix. The listed buildings in Abbey Close form a group with the east end of No 1 Finger Lane.
