Description

This is a First World War memorial located on the village green in the centre of Tarrant Monkton. The memorial is approximately 3 metres high and consists of a short Portland stone obelisk set upon a tapering square Portland stone plinth, which itself rests on a limestone block base. A furled banner and wreath are carved in relief on the front face of the obelisk. The square plinth is inscribed with black painted incised lettering, reading: “SACRED/ TO THE MEMORY OF/ THE FOLLOWING MEN FROM/ TARRANT MONKTON/ AND LAUNCESTON/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/ THE GREAT WAR. 1914 – 18./ (NAMES)”.
