Description
Conjuror's Lodge is a workshop and store built in the late 18th century or early 19th century. It features a front made of squared and dressed stone, with rubble returns and a corrugated asbestos-cement roof. The building is long and narrow, standing two storeys tall with its gable facing the street. A loading-bay door is centrally located on the first floor, above a larger pair of 20th-century doors set within a plain band surround, which is offset to the right at ground level. The building has a raised verge and dressed flush alternating quoins. To the right, a straight flight of stone steps with a stone balustrade leads up to the first-floor door. At the back, there is a glazing bar sash window on each level. This property is said to have been used in the 19th century by a breakaway Dissenting sect, which is the origin of its unusual name. It is a rare surviving example of this type of building on Portland and has historical significance in illustrating the development of non-conformity, an important aspect of the island's social history.
