Description
Gullivers is a detached cottage located in Worth Matravers, dating from the mid to late 17th century. It features rubble stone walls, a stone slate roof, and stone stacks at both ends and the center. The building is positioned at right angles to the road and consists of one storey with an attic. The west front, which serves as the entrance, has a lean-to extension on the right side and a part-glazed door. The ground floor includes three casement windows with glazing bars, indicating the presence of former stone mullions. In the attic, there are two pent-roofed half-dormers with casement windows. Above the door, there is a carved stone corbel. The main room on the ground floor has a large open fireplace with a timber lintel and a bread oven, along with some chamfered ceiling beams. The roof structure includes massive trusses, which may have originally been jointed crucks. At the rear of the cottage, there are attached outbuildings constructed in a similar style, although some of their roofs have been replaced with corrugated asbestos. The cottage is reputed to have been the home of Gulliver, a noted Dorset smuggler.
