Description
The Parish Church of St Edwold is a historic church that was rebuilt in the 15th century, with a west porch added in 1636. The building features rubble walls with freestone dressings and a slate roof, which has stone slate eaves and stone gable copings adorned with ogival moulded kneelers. A 19th-century cross is located on the east gable. The west gable includes an early 17th-century bell-cote, which is supported by four Roman Doric columns and topped with a round stone dome that has a cornice, ball-terminal, and pinnacles over the columns.
The nave and chancel are combined into one cell. The east window consists of three trefoiled lights with tracery set in a two-centred head, featuring a label and returned stops. The north wall has a window with two trefoiled lights that has been completely restored. The south wall contains two windows: the eastern window is an early 15th-century design with two trefoiled lights in a square head, featuring a 20th-century rere-arch; the western window is from the 16th century and has three four-centred lights in a square head with a label.
The west doorway has straight-chamfered jambs and a segmental-pointed head, with a plank door fitted with strap hinges. The 17th-century porch at the west end has a stone slab roof, stone gable copings, and moulded kneelers. The entrance features moulded jambs, projecting imposts, a round arch, and a dropped keystone, with a stone panel above inscribed "W.P. 1636." Inside, the church has flagstone floors and a 19th-century octagonal stone font decorated with IHS and cross motifs, supported by a circular stem and moulded base. The church is currently cared for by The Churches Conservation Trust.
