Description
The ventilator shaft, dating from around 1870, is part of the sewer system and is constructed from Portland ashlar. It features an octagonal shaft that sits on a high base and pedestal. There is a cavetto-moulded string approximately 2.5 meters above the base, leading to a tapered shaft capped with an ovolo mould, a frieze, and a necking band. The shaft includes eight cast-iron vents positioned about 0.5 meters above the string. The total height of the shaft is approximately 7.5 meters, with each side of the octagon measuring around 570 millimeters at the pedestal. This structure is located in the garden of the former Governor's house, about 75 meters south of The Grove, and is one of three remaining shafts in the area.
