Description

The gas main ventilator, dating from around 1905, is a cast-iron structure designed in a tower form with decorative Art Nouveau detailing. It is located on a traffic island at the head of Justice Mill Lane, at the junction with Holburn Street. The ventilator features a later concrete base with splayed corners that supports a cylindrical shaft. The base is adorned with stylised foliage, and the shaft rises with reeded moulding in four places, resembling plant stalks. It culminates in a frieze of stylised flowers and is topped with an arcaded ventilator head, which is further decorated with stylised foliage and finished with a polygonal cap that has a finial.
