Description
The ventilator shaft, built around 1870, is part of the sewer system and is located at NGR SY 7037 7216 in Portland. It is constructed from Portland ashlar and features an octagonal shape with a high base and pedestal. The pedestal has a cavetto-moulded string at approximately 2.5 meters from the base, leading to a tapered shaft that culminates in a capping adorned with an ovolo mould, frieze, and necking band. Eight cast-iron vents are positioned on the shaft about 0.5 meters above the string. The total height of the shaft is approximately 7.5 meters, with each side of the octagon measuring around 570 millimeters to the pedestal. This structure is situated at the cliff edge, about 100 meters south of the corner at the eastern end of The Grove, and is one of three remaining shafts of its kind.
