Description
The ventilator shaft, dating from around 1870, is part of the sewer system and is constructed from Portland ashlar. It features an octagonal shaft that stands on a high base and pedestal. There is a cavetto-mould string approximately 2.5 meters above the base, leading to a tapered shaft capped with an ovolo mould, a frieze, and a necking band. Eight cast-iron vents are set into the shaft about 0.5 meters above the string. The total height of the structure is approximately 7.5 meters, with each side of the octagon measuring about 570 millimeters at the pedestal. This shaft is located on the cliff edge, around 100 meters north of the eastern corner of The Grove, and is one of three remaining shafts in the area.
