Hm Young Offender Institution, Overseer'S Hut With Inclines

The Overseer's Hut at HM Young Offender Institution was built around 1848 and is constructed from Portland stone ashlar, including the roof. This small building is set into a slope to the south and faces north, directly opposite the entrance through the northern boundary wall. It features a semi-octagonal front with a central 19th-century plank door that has a segmental head, flanked by single deep-set casement windows on the canted sides. The steeply pitched roof is made of solid stone overlapping slabs, and above the door, there is a small stone gablet that projects from the semi-octagonal hipped roof. The rear of the hut is plain and partly embedded in the bank. On either side, there are approach inclines made from large Portland stone setts, with stone gutter sections on the northern side. The interior has not been seen. This hut was designed for overseeing the activities of prisoners as they entered and exited through the doorway in the northern wall, which is aligned on the central axis of the entire complex leading to the main gate to the south.
