Description
This is a sewer vent located opposite number 92 Cheyne Walk in Chelsea, built in 1874 for the Metropolitan Board of Works. The supervising architect was George Vulliamy, and it was part of the northern outfall sewer extension engineered by Sir Joseph Bazalgette, which opened that same year. The vent features tall cast iron columns designed to draw off vapours from the sewer and disperse foul odours high above the embankment. It has a tri-partite composition with a tapering fluted lower section above a quarter-circle moulding that includes an arch and arrow motif. Below this, there is a cable moulding, a lotus leaf frieze, and an embossed upper band. The 15-foot shaft has three moulded bands, and the coved terminal is topped with trefoil-pierced cresting. The base includes a plaque inscribed with "J STONES AND CO/ ENGINEERS/ DEPTFORD. LONDON SE," and there is also a removable cover on the opposite side with a similar inscription. This vent is recognized as a distinctive element of a significant engineering achievement.
