Description

Battersea Bridge, designed by J W Bazalgette in 1890, is a Grade II listed structure featuring five spans of unequal radii that rise to a distinct central apex. The piers have stone-faced cutwaters with channelled rustication, and each pier supports a stone pilaster that extends to road level. The wrought iron spans spring from the piers, with their outer edges swept back in a concave section and ribbed. The spandrels are adorned with iron panels featuring foliated decoration in flat relief. Above the spans, a cornice that curves around the stone pilasters indicates the road line. This cornice supports stone pedestals with swept cornices above each pilaster, and between every two pedestals is an iron balustrade made up of coupled colonnettes from which stilted arches spring. The bridge was previously listed under the London Borough of Wandsworth, but that entry was removed from the list on 15 November 2017.
