Description

Compton Valence House is a late 19th-century rectory, now a house, dating from 1872. It is constructed of rock-faced walls with dressings and a string course in lias stone, and has clay tile roofs with stone gable-copings and moulded kneelers. The main front features gabled bays on the left and over the central porch, with a gable at the right end. Brick stacks with stone plinths are positioned on the left front gable and the right hand end gable. The façade is two storeys high and has three irregular bays. A sash window is located within the stack projection on the left, featuring plate glass and thin lights on either side, topped with a trefoil head. Above the porch entrance is an oriel window with trefoil-headed lights, cross-transomed detailing, and a crenellated parapet. Bay three has cross-transomed stone mullion windows with sashes. The central porch has a chamfered entrance arch with a segmental-pointed head, and a plank-and-muntin front door with a four-centred head. The garden elevation is 1½ storeys high, with three bays and cross-transomed windows of three lights each, plus a canted bay to the ground floor on the right. This is a complete example of a High Victorian rectory, and is asymmetrical, exhibiting “Perpendicular” style decorative details.
