Description
There are five table tombs located approximately 5 metres south and west of the parish church in Whitchurch Canonicorum. The tombs date from the 17th century and one is from the mid-18th century.
The first tomb, situated west of the west tower, has a date of 1748 that is still legible. It features a roll-moulded stone cornice with moulded angle balusters and a flat cherub face at the centre of the main face, with double arches on the main sides.
The second tomb is from the later 17th century and has a moulded ogee stone cornice, though the lettering is now illegible and partly covered in ivy.
The third tomb dates to 1620 and reads, "Here lieth the body of John Ev(...) Junior," but the rest of the inscription is illegible. It also has a moulded ogee stone cornice.
The fourth tomb is the best preserved, dating to around 1610, although the date is partly obscured. It features Gothic lettering that reads, "Here lieth the body of John (...) of Wootton Abbotts in the County of Dorset, gentleman, who after ... aged 72," along with a moulded stone cornice and necking.
The fifth tomb is from the early 17th century and has a moulded stone cornice and necking, but the inscription is illegible.
