Description

Thatch Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with a front wing added in the 17th century and a left extension that may have once been a separate cottage and outbuilding, likely from the 18th century. The cottage features rubble stone walls, with the left extension being plastered and the upper part of the gable of the wing rebuilt in brick. It has a thatched roof with one brick stack at the left end of the original wing and another at the right end where it meets the wing. The cottage has an L-shaped plan with a projecting service wing at a lower level than the main range, and is one storey with an attic.

The projecting wing contains one casement window with glazing bars on each floor. The entrance to the main range is approached by steps and features a 20th-century stone and glazed timber porch with a lean-to corrugated sheet roof. There is a blocked original doorway to the right of the porch. The ground floor has two casement windows with horizontal glazing bars and a small fire window at the left end. The attic includes two dormers with casements that also have horizontal glazing bars.

Internally, the ground floor room in the front wing has a chamfered ceiling beam. In the main range, the right ground floor room features a large open fireplace with a curved chamfered lintel and some stop-chamfered ceiling beams. The left ground floor room also has a large open fireplace with a curved chamfered timber lintel, remains of a bread oven, and a fire window, along with a chamfered ceiling beam. At the rear, there is a single-storey lean-to with plastered walls and a tiled roof.
