Description
East Almer Lodge is a gateway and lodge built around 1840, designed in a classical style and constructed from stucco. It features a tall arch that is flanked by plain wide pilasters, with simple mouldings on the cornice and architrave, and a deep frieze that includes a stone panel. At the top of the arch is a pediment adorned with an armorial relief. The bold impost moulding continues as the cornice for the single-storeyed pavilions that make up the lodge, which end in pilasters, each containing a central window (blocked on the north elevation). Inside the arch, there is a niche above a doorway. A small service wing with a slate roof extends from the west side. The gateway is complemented by ornamental wrought iron gates. The panel on the north-facing road front is inscribed with "This Road from Wimborne to Dorchester was projected and completed through the instrumentality of J S W SAWBRIDGE ERLE DRAX Esq MP in the Years 1811 and 1812." The panel on the south side bears a worn inscription regarding the closure of the road by order of the Magistrates in 1811.
