Description
Nos. 21 and 23 on West Street are a pair of cottages that were originally built as one house in the late 16th to early 17th century. They feature rubble stone walls and stone slate roofs, with two brick stacks and one stone stack. The cottages are two stories high with attics and were originally designed with a three-room and cross-passage layout.
No. 21 has a ledged door, and its ground floor includes two casement windows with glazing bars. The first floor has one casement window with a central horizontal bar, and the attic features a small pent-roofed dormer with a casement window.
No. 23 has a ledged door set in a stone four-centred arch. Its ground floor has one casement window with glazing bars beneath a flat arch, while the first floor contains two casement windows with a central horizontal bar. Although the interiors are not accessible, it is noted that No. 21 contains a 17th-century fireplace and a stone spiral staircase, according to the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England.
