Description
The Stone Lodge and the Gatehouse, with gatepiers and gates, form a pair of lodges at a former entrance to a deer park, probably dating from around 1775 and designed by Sir William Chambers. The lodges are constructed of ashlar stone with low-pitched slate roofs, featuring pediments with dentil cornices and simple moulded architraves, and are square in plan. Each lodge has two storeys. Each elevation features a round-arched window with glazing bars flanked by smaller fixed windows, creating a rudimentary Venetian style. Casement windows with glazing bars are also present on the inner side walls, one on each floor. The elevation facing the park has a panelled door with a semi-circular fanlight containing ornamental glazing on the ground floor, and a casement with glazing bars on the first floor. A single-storey extension from the 20th century is located on the left side of The Stone Lodge (when viewed from the drive), built of flint and stone bonding. The adjoining wall is plastered with a concrete slate roof. The Gatehouse has a 19th-century extension on its right side, extended in the 20th century, constructed from brick and flint banding, partly slate-hung, with a hipped tiled roof.
Originally, the lodges contained one room on each floor, with access to the upper floors provided by cast iron spiral staircases. A pair of square ashlar stone gatepiers connect the lodges via upswept ashlar stone walls. The gatepiers have dentil cornices and caps with ball finials, and semi-circular niches facing the drive. The ornamental iron gates feature a U-shaped top rail and arrow-head tops to the uprights.
