Description

Cedar Court is a house that was formerly a rectory, built in 1716 with alterations around 1800 and in the mid-19th century. The original work was done for Dr. Charles Sloper, the 1800 alterations for Rev. Thomas Rackett, a noted naturalist, and the mid-19th century work for Rev. Henry Vizard. The building features Flemish bond brickwork with tiled roofs that are partially hidden behind parapets and end brick stacks. It has a mix of two and three storeys with attics.

The southwest facade is symmetrical with five bays arranged in a 1:3:1 pattern. The central bays are topped with a broken pediment. The 19th-century windows are 12-pane sashes set under flat, gauged brick arches. The central doorway is round-headed, featuring panelled reveals and a decorated fanlight, with a panelled door beneath a flat porch supported by Corinthian columns and pilasters.

The northeast front is also nearly symmetrical with five bays, mostly featuring 18-pane sashes, while the first floor on the left has 12-pane sashes. The ground floor includes 2-light casements with leaded lights. A large central staircase features a 52-pane sash window and gauged brick arches. There is an 8-panel part-glazed door on the first floor under a flat hood supported by Doric columns, accessed by a flight of steps.

Internally, notable features include a high-quality oak staircase with marquetry inlay, Tuscan column newels, turned and shaped balusters, and a moulded handrail. Various rooms contain full-height bolection-moulded panelling and fireplaces from the 18th and 19th centuries.
