Description
Spetisbury War Memorial is situated in the churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist and is made from Ham Hill stone. The memorial features a Latin cross that rises from an octagonal tapering shaft. This shaft is placed on an octagonal plinth, which sits atop a three-stepped base.
Originally, the inscriptions were carved directly into the stone, but they have since been replaced with incised plaques on two faces, which display the years 1914 – 1918 along with names. The main dedication, still incised into the stone, reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND THE PROUD MEMORY OF THE MEN OF HIS VILLAGE WHO DIED IN THE CAUSE OF LIBERTY 1914 – 1919." The other faces of the memorial still faintly show the names as they were originally inscribed. Additionally, an inclined stone tablet across the bottom step is inscribed with 1939 – 1945 and names.
