Description
East Farm House is a farmhouse with origins dating back to the 17th century, but it was largely rebuilt in 1765, as noted in the diary of James Frampton. The building features walls made of a combination of brick, stone, and brick and flint banding, topped with a tiled roof that has stone eaves courses and brick stacks. The farmhouse has an L-shaped plan, with the main front range constructed in 1765 and a rear kitchen wing that appears to be from the 17th century. Both sections have later lean-to additions at the back, made of brick with slate roofs.
The main front elevation, facing west, consists of two storeys and attics, with brick walls and a dentil cornice at the eaves. The central doorway has a stone surround and a flat hood supported by stone brackets. There are two double-hung sash windows with glazing bars and keystones above the arches, along with three similar windows on the first floor. The attic features one dormer with casements and lead lights. The north gable wall is made of stone with brick detailing, while the rear wing has walls of brick and flint banding, with stone quoins. It includes two-light stone mullioned windows on both the ground and first floors, also with lead lights. The south elevation has brick walls and double-hung sash windows with glazing bars on both the ground and first floors, plus two dormers with casements in the attic. A later added conservatory is also present.
Inside, the south ground floor room has a large chimney stack and a fireplace with a four-centred stone arch, which may have been re-set, as large ovens behind it were removed fairly recently. There is a former external door, now internal, in the rear wing that has a semi-circular stone arch, and one deep chamfered ceiling beam is visible.
