Description
Fiddleford Mill House is a manor house, now divided into two residences, likely built for William Latimer. It dates from the late 14th century and features a hall and solar, with extensions to the solar added in the 16th and 18th centuries, along with some remodeling from the 17th century. The building is constructed of coursed rubble, with a tiled roof over the hall, a stone slate roof over the solar, and a long north range that is also slated with stone slate verges. The gable ends are finished with ashlar dressings. The north range has two storeys and includes hollow chamfered stone mullioned windows with one, two, and three lights. There are brick stacks located at the ridge and gable ends of the hall, and the west porch features a Tudor arch. Reused carved stonework has been incorporated into the 18th-century addition.
The hall and solar boast impressive cusp arch-braced collar-beam roofs with cusped wind braces. Inside, the hall contains moulded and decorated screen passage doors, as well as a 16th-century fireplace. The solar includes an undercroft with plank and muntin partitions and other early woodwork. The north range features 16th-century fireplaces, a 16th-century plaster ceiling, stud partitions, and additional woodwork from the 16th and 17th centuries. The building is scheduled as an ancient monument.
