Description
Spa House, originally a pump room and baths for Nottington Spa, is now a private detached house. It was built in 1830 by Robert Vining for Thomas Shore. The building is a lofty, three-story structure with a basement, and is octagonal in plan with a pyramidal slate roof. The exterior is rendered with scribing; the central face features an octagonal brick stack. Each of the eight faces is defined by full-height panelled pilasters. The upper floors have twelve-pane sash windows, except on the south elevation, which has a blind panel on each floor. The first floor on the south (road) side has sixteen-pane sashes with another blank panel. The ground floor features a mix of two-light casements (one with margin-pane glazing), sixteen- and twenty-pane sashes, and a blind panel to the east. To the northeast is an arched opening with a pair of glazed doors, margin bars to the glass, a fanlight above, and two steps leading up to it. The original projecting gabled porch, on the southeast, has a sash window set within an arch. A replacement lean-to porch and door have been added to the west side. The basement retains four two-light casements. A plain string course runs along the first floor, and a small plinth is present at the base. The interior is divided by a north-south wall, with fireplaces on one side, and the basement is said to contain the original pump. Historical records indicate that the spa waters were described as "hepatic of sulphereous," and the Spa House was noted in Kelly’s 1867 Directory.
