Description
The walls, gates, and outbuilding to Number 162 Brook House are boundary features dating from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, located on Church Street in Upwey, Weymouth. Constructed from stone and brick, with wrought- and cast-iron elements, the outbuilding currently lacks a roof covering, which was originally slate. The boundary walls are built in rubble or coursed stone, backed with brickwork. The wall along Church Street rises to a plain coping at approximately 2 meters high and features a square dressed stone pier with capping to the left. In front of the house, the wall is reduced to a plinth level and supports railings in three bays on either side of a central gate, with an additional wooden gate to the far right. At both ends of this section, there are rendered piers topped with ball finials. The wall continues to the right, enclosing the garden to the northwest and northeast. Beyond the left-hand pier on Church Street, there is an opening approximately 3 meters wide, leading to a small square rubble outbuilding that was originally a stable or carriage house. This outbuilding has a half-hipped roof and stands two stories high, featuring a square plank loading bay facing the street above a wide blocked opening. Inside, it has a simple purlin roof, and facing a small enclosed courtyard are a pair of wide plank doors.
