Description

Tregonwell Cottages and the Reading Room in Milton Abbas is an almshouse block originally built in 1674 and re-erected on its current site in 1779. The building features walls made of brick with flint banding and stone dressings, topped with a tiled roof that has moulded coped gables and stone eaves courses. It is a single-storey structure with four brick stacks along the ridge, each having two square shafts set diagonally.

The Reading Room, which is now used as the Village Hall, is centrally located and has a gable end facing the road. Its ground floor showcases three moulded stone arches with ornamented projecting keystones supported by Tuscan columns. The central arch contains a ledged door, while the outer arches feature two-light windows with lead lights. This section is framed by two composite columns that support an entablature and moulded cornice. Above, in the gable, are three circular windows with moulded stone surrounds, and a Coat of Arms is displayed in the center with a date stone from 1779 below it on each side of the Reading Room.

The wings of the almshouse each have two ledged doors set in four-centred arched stone surrounds, along with four stone mullioned windows that also have lead lights. Inside the Reading Room, exposed ceiling beams can be seen.
