Description
St Giles' Hospital is a group of former almshouses located on St Owen Street in Hereford, dating from around 1770. The building is constructed of dressed sandstone with a brick pediment and eaves, topped by a concrete tile roof and featuring three brick ridge stacks. It has a five-unit plan, is single storey with an attic, and has a five-window range. The central unit includes a plank door with a flat arch, sheltered by a simple bracketed hood, and is flanked by three-light casements. On either side, there are two units with similar entrances and 3/3 casements. The building has brick modillion eaves and a stuccoed central pediment with an inscription. The roof features 20th-century dormers with Gothick glazing. On the left side, there is a reset 12th-century tympanum, and there are 20th-century outhouses and gables at the rear.
Inside No. 147, there is a possible 18th-century winder stair and a 19th-century light and screen. The first floor contains a 19th-century plank door, exposed purlins, and a stepped brick stack. The ground floor features stop-chamfered ceiling beams and a recessed area with a moulded stone arch.
