Description
The Sun Inn is a house, later used as an inn, dating from the later 18th century, situated on St Owen Street in Hereford. The building is constructed of painted brick, with a hipped double-depth Welsh slate roof, a brick ridge stack, and two stacks to the rear. It has three storeys and a cellar. The front facade has a three-window range. The windows are mostly 8/8 sashes, with a late 19th-century twin sash to the right, all set beneath gauged brick flat arches. Above these are smaller 4/4 and twin sashes. A central entrance has double doors with fielded panels and a fanlight, sheltered by a moulded and modillioned flat hood supported on consoles and panelled pilasters. To the left of the entrance is a 20th-century 3/3 sash under a gauged brick flat arch, and to the right, a late 19th-century shop front with a half-glazed door, overlight, plate-glass window, and a fascia board with console stops on fluted pilasters. The left returned side features an 8/8 sash with a 4/4 sash above; a half-glazed panelled door under a simple hood on plain pilasters; and a 3/3 sash. A rear wing, dating from the late 19th century, contains various sashes and two panelled doors, one with a similar doorcase to the main entrance.
The interior retains a late 18th/early 19th-century staircase with turned newels, stick balusters, and a swan neck rail. A mid-19th century winder stair with stick balusters leads to the rear. On the second floor, there are two early 19th-century fireplace surrounds. The second floor also has early 19th-century, 2-panel doors with architraves, as do the windows and doorways. The first floor has early 19th-century panelling, picture rails, dado rail, architraves to doors and windows, slate or marble fireplaces, 6-panel doors, wall cupboards, a part-glazed 6-panel door with overlight, and a 4-panel door. The ground floor includes a mid-19th-century 4-panel door and overlight to the hall, 6-panel doors, a curved screen with lights to the hall, a mid-19th-century marble fireplace, and a plank door leading to the cellar, which has stop-chamfered ceiling beams and is stone-lined.
