Description

The Barrels is a former hotel located on St Owen Street in Hereford. The building features a late 19th-century front but has a core that likely dates back to the late 18th century. It is constructed with roughcast over stucco and has a steeply pitched 20th-century composite tile roof, adorned with 19th-century ridge tiles.

The structure is two storeys tall, with an attic and cellar, and has a four-window range. The windows are 20th-century, 2/2 sashes set beneath cambered hood-mouldings. There are two roof dormers above, also featuring 2/2 sashes with moulded arched pediments leading to their roofs. The entrance, located to the right of the center, has a 20th-century glazed door and screen, complemented by an ornate cast fanlight in a panelled doorcase. This is topped with an open pediment and a modillioned wood hood supported by panelled consoles. Flanking the entrance are paired windows with overlights, some of which have etched glass, set within cambered and shouldered stucco architraves with keyblocks. The building also features a moulded band, stucco quoins, and vermiculated detailing on the ground floor.

To the right, there is a lower two-window range with a 19th-century half-glazed panelled door and a plain overlight, beneath a moulded flat hood on grooved pilasters. The right side of the building has a two-panel door with a similar doorcase. At the rear, there are two 18th-century brick axial stacks, reduced to the left, with a narrow pilaster.

Inside, the first floor features a 19th-century dogleg staircase with stick balusters leading to the second floor, which has a late 17th-century exposed timber-framing and a plank door. The first floor also includes an early 19th-century fireplace, plank doors with H hinges, two-panel doors, architraves, late 18th-century panelling, a 19th-century fire surround, and a picture rail. The ground floor has a picture rail, six-panel doors, a side light, a stairwell light, and a wall cupboard. The cellar contains stone-based brick arches, a partly flagged floor, and a plank door.
