Description
The Outer Gatehouse, dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, is a significant remnant of a monastic structure. It features fragments of moulded ashlar and rubble-stone. The outer archway retains the west jamb and springer of the main segmental arch, and within this archway is possibly the springer of a pedestrian entrance arch that has been re-set. The north wall extends 5 metres to the west of this opening and incorporates 12th century and later medieval carved stonework that has also been re-set. The inner archway of the gatehouse is represented by the lower part of its east chamfered jamb, with an interval of 2.5 metres between the two arches. This site is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
