Description
Coverham Abbey Gatehouse is a significant structure that dates back to the early 16th century, with later modifications. It is constructed from rubble with ashlar dressings and features stone slate roofs. The remains of the gatehouse include an inner arch and outer responds of a vaulted gateway, along with flanking buildings. The gateway has a semicircular arch composed of two chamfered orders with moulded imposts. Each of the flanking buildings contains a small light vent in the original outer end walls, and the southern building features a chamfered single-light window on its inner end wall. The side walls have been repaired to create animal shelters, which have rubble barrel-vaulted ceilings beneath later roofs.
