Description

Braithwaite Hall is a manor house dated 1667, constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings and a stone slate roof. The building is 2½ storeys high and has an E-plan layout, featuring three gables above four first-floor windows on the front and two projecting wings at the rear. The structure has quoins and a central board door set in a chamfered quoined surround with a triangular soffit to the lintel. The ground floor has six double-chamfered 2-light mullioned windows with casements. There are continuous strings above the ground and first-floor windows. The outer two gables have blocked 2-light windows above blind oculi with torus moulding in the stone surround, while the central gable features a blind oval. The roof has shaped kneelers and ashlar copings.

On the rear elevation, the central range has a part-blocked mullioned and transomed landing window and a 20-pane sash window in a stone surround on the ground floor, with 2-light windows on the first floor. The left wing has a 20th-century window on the ground floor and a 2-light window on the first floor, with a gable coped and two blocked windows, topped by a corniced ashlar stack. The right wing features a 3-light mullioned window on both the ground and first floors, and a blocked 2-light window on the second floor. Both wings have doorways similar to the central entrance.

The left elevation has a large projecting chimney breast on a plinth with a corbelled stack and a single-light window on the first floor, along with a smaller corbelled chimney breast extending from the first floor. All windows have stone surrounds.

Inside, the hall contains a large fireplace with a chamfered surround and a triangular soffit to the lintel, along with a corniced mantelshelf. The room to the right of the hall is contemporarily panelled. The bedroom above the hall features a chamfered fireplace, and the bedroom above the room to the left of the hall has a chamfered fireplace and 18th-century panelling. The oak staircase has solid plank treads, turned balusters, and ball finials on the newels. The beams throughout the house have deep chamfers with run-out stops.
