Description

Coverham Abbey House is a house dating from the 16th century and the late 18th to early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and has a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has five bays, featuring an L-shaped plan.

The south front, which is from the late 18th to early 19th century, includes a part-glazed four-panel door beneath a fanlight, set within a Doric doorcase that has an open pediment, tall entablatures, and bases. The facade features sash windows with glazing bars, set in projecting ashlar surrounds, including a tripartite window above the door, which is topped by a cyma recta drip mould. The roof has shaped kneelers and ashlar copings, with ashlar end stacks that were noted to be in poor condition at the time of resurvey.

At the rear to the left is an older range made of roughcast rubble, also with a stone slate roof, which has two lower storeys and windows in the west elevation that incorporate 16th-century stonework. The east return of the main house displays a lengthy medieval Latin inscription that refers to the completion of a rebuilding project in 1508. This inscription is flanked by figures of Christ in Majesty on the left and an abbot on the right, possibly representing the seal of the abbey. Above the inscription are the letters "IHC" surmounted by a coronet, with an eagle to the left and a capital letter "A" on the right, which represents John Askew, the abbot from 1488 to 1509.

Inside, the house features Adam-style fireplaces, friezes, and cornices in the front range.
