Description

Garth Cottage is an abbey guesthouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the 16th century and 19th century, possibly incorporating a medieval core. The building is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof. It has two storeys.

On the east elevation, there is a central studded board door set in a stone surround with a straight-sided pointed arch and an ogee-section chamfer. Above the door is a stepped hoodmould that contains the letters "IHC" and a Latin inscription, flanked by an eagle and the letter "A", along with decorative rosettes, leaves, and pomegranates. To the left of the central door is a part-glazed door within a chamfered doorcase. There are three corbels that once supported a lean-to roof of a cloister. The first floor features mullion windows with configurations of 2, 1, and 2 lights.

The west elevation has a ground floor that includes a 9-light chamfered mullion and transom window, which has trefoiled semi-circular heads to the lights and is topped with a double-chamfered hoodmould. There is also a slightly projecting bay with a 6-pane sash window below a 3-light trefoil-headed window under a cavetto hoodmould. On the first floor, there are 5-light, 2-light, and 4-light chamfered-mullion windows, all under ovolo hoodmoulds, with the rightmost window featuring labels. The building has stacks located at the left end and between the first and second bays.

Inside, there is a large window with an ovolo section to the overall opening, and a large ashlar fireplace that is chamfered, featuring a segmental arch and a cyma recta section hoodmould.
