Description
These are a pair of cottages situated in a row. They have a core dating back to the 17th century, with a significant alteration in the 19th century. The walls are built of rubble stone and the roof is thatched with gabled ends. There are two gabled half-dormers to the front of the cottages. Brick stacks are located at the left and right-hand gables, and a stone stack is in the centre of the ridge and topped with brick. The cottages are one-and-a-half storeys high and have three windows, which are mainly 2-light wooden casements with glazing bars, wooden sills, and lintels. Number 438 has two dormers under one large gable, while number 439 has one dormer under a smaller gable. The front door of number 438 is centrally located, panelled, studded and of 20th-century construction. The front door of number 439 is to the right of centre, is a plank door within a 19th-century wooden frame. Evidence of earlier features may exist in the interiors, although access was not possible at the time of inspection. A late 19th-century extension to the south end of the cottages is considered to be of no particular architectural interest.
