Description
The telephone box in Thornford is a Grade II listed structure made of cast iron and glass. It features three glazed sides divided into eight sections with margin lights, and a solid rear side that has reeded decoration. Above the four arched sides is a canopy dome inspired by Sir John Soane, with a crown in relief above each glazed panel that is inscribed with the word 'TELEPHONE'.
This K6, or 'Jubilee' telephone kiosk, was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V. It is a development of Scott's earlier K2 box design, and around 11,000 boxes of this design were ultimately produced.
The K6 telephone kiosk in Thornford is recognized as an iconic example of industrial design, showcasing Scott's adaptation of Neoclassical forms for modern technology. It is also noted for its good visual relationship with other Grade II listed buildings and its central location in the village.
