Description
The Black Bear Hotel is a mid-18th century building featuring two late 18th century three-storey bow windows. The exterior is finished in stucco with a pitched tile roof and red brick chimney stacks. The hotel stands three storeys high and has a moulded eaves cornice. A balustrade with vase balusters and four piers adorns the building. There are three window ranges, with the outer two being three-storey segmental bows, each storey featuring its own entablature, including an elaborately dentilled cornice. All windows are sashes with glazing bars. The central range, which includes a door on the ground floor, has moulded surrounds with keys: a sash with glazing bars on the second floor, and modern French windows on the first floor leading to a mid-19th century porch supported by two Greek Doric columns, topped with an elaborate wrought iron balustrade. A statue of a bear standing on its hind legs is positioned in the centre of the balcony. The hotel is part of a group that includes Nos 2 to 10 (even), The Unitarian Chapel, Nos 12 to 32 (even), and Holy Trinity Gallery.
