Description
The Unitarian Church, formerly known as the Unitarian Chapel, was opened on 29 September 1830. It is constructed of stucco and features a tetrastyle Roman Ionic portico raised on high bases, accessed by seven steps set between panelled retaining walls. The portico is adorned with a full entablature and blocking course. There are blind walls on either side, each with round-headed panels and a full entablature. The central attic includes panelled flanking pilasters, a cornice, and a pediment. The entrance has four-panelled double doors topped with an ornamental lamp bracket. The courtyard is paved with stone setts.
Inside, there is a gallery supported by two slender Tuscan columns along the east side, featuring an entablature, panelling, and cornice. A clock by Edward Wilkins from Newport, Isle of Wight, is present, along with other fittings from the late 19th century, including a communion rail and pulpit rails with very elaborate iron balusters. The church also houses an excellent organ in an elaborate Gothic style, a modern neo-classical organ, and a brass pulpit from 1903.
The Unitarian Church is part of a group that includes Nos 2 to 10 (even), the Unitarian Chapel, Nos 12 to 32 (even), and Holy Trinity Gallery.
