Description
The Arne Isolation Hospital is a former isolation hospital built in the early 1900s using a pre-fabricated system by Humphrey's of Knightsbridge, specifically type 3 from their range published in 1900. The building features a timber frame on a brick base, clad in corrugated iron, with a pitched corrugated iron roof. It is a single-storey structure that includes two wards accessible via external porches on either side of a central kitchen, bathroom, store, washroom, and three asymmetrically placed bedrooms, all reached through an off-centre lobby. The design includes louvres over the wards and a single brick chimney over the kitchen. The windows are top-opening casements. This hospital is noted for being a model pre-fabricated isolation hospital, representing a type that was once significant in the treatment of diseases in Britain and the Empire, and it is now recognized as the best-preserved example of its kind.
